Zak Crawley Unaware of Stokes' Controversial 'Frail Characters' Remarks

The English opener Crawley has indicated he was not familiar with statements from captain Stokes regarding the team environment not being "those lacking fortitude".

The all-rounder made this message in multiple conversations following his team's loss in the second match of the Ashes against the Australians previously.

In the lead-up to the third Test, where the visitors are staring at defeat at the earliest opportunity, Stokes noted he had let his sentiment to "circulate freely" among the squad.

"I have completed the necessary discussions in recent days that I needed to have done," said Stokes.

However, following Crawley scored a knock of 85 on the penultimate day in Adelaide, he commented: "I missed those remarks."

"I wasn't actively searching for it. We take everything that is said in the media with a pinch of salt," he added.

Frank Discussions and Consistent Messaging

The captain made the "weak men" comment subsequent to England were beaten in Brisbane to go 2-0 down.

The England squad subsequently took a break to Noosa between the second and third matches.

Prior to this match, he said his team had held "raw" conversations and he had asked them to "display some fight" in their effort to stay alive in the series.

Yet, Crawley asserted the messaging from Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum had remained consistent with their prior tenure in charge.

"The atmosphere has been very positive, the same as always," said the opener. "It's on maintaining positivity, playing our brand, with great liberty. We believed we were capable of an extraordinary feat entering this game."

Australia On the Verge of Historic Ashes Triumph

The opener's dismissal on day four came during a decisive triple-strike by Australian off-spinner Lyon.

The spinner's three wickets in a short spell – he also bowled Brook and Ben Stokes – left England 207-6 in pursuit of a notional total of 435 runs.

Consequently, the home team need four wickets on Sunday's last day to move to an unassailable 3-0 lead after three matches played.

A loss will extend England's winless run in Australia to 18 consecutive matches and condemn them to a fourth successive overseas Ashes series defeat.

The current battle will be completed in just eleven days of cricket – with England fell the first two Tests in rapid time respectively.

Not since 1921, when the Australians completed victory in England in eight days, has the destination of the urn been determined more swiftly. Australia have also won in eleven days on two other instances in the 21st century.

"This is disappointing," admitted the batsman. "Our goal was to win the Ashes and now we are staring down the barrel now."

"There will still be significant pride at stake and we'll definitely view it with that mindset," he continued.

"The challenge has been tough. They're a very, very good side. It was always going to be hard coming here to face them. They were the front-runners and have demonstrated their quality."

Pope's Place In Question

While the opener's innings in the third Test probably answers questions about his short-term place in the England team, Pope looks under threat for his spot in the fourth Test starting December 26th.

The Surrey batsman fell for 17 in the team's second innings on Saturday, adding to his poor record versus the old enemy.

Across sixteen Ashes knocks, Pope has never made a fifty and boasts an average of just 17.62.

Only one other English batsman in over a century – Amiss – has played an equal number of innings in the top six in the Ashes and returned a poorer average.

But, Crawley said any suggestion Pope is under the microscope originates with "you guys" – meaning the press – "not inside the camp."

"We all know of his considerable talent," said Crawley. "Ollie has enjoyed a productive year to be frank."

"He has played several excellent innings. This is noise from the outside. There is no chat of that nature regarding Pope amongst the players," Crawley concluded.
